St. Mark's took approximately 18 months to build and was
incomplete at the time of the consecration.
St. Mark's was consecrated at 11.30 am
on Good Friday 24th April 1866. |

The two
pictures above were taken between November 1864 and April 1866.
Unfortunately the pictures are
of very poor quality, but at least they give you some idea
of St. Mark's heritage. They show St. Mark's being built.

St. Mark's Church Site
was purchased on the 11th August 1862 from Charles Churchill.
The Church was built by James Wilkins and Son.
The Bond & Agreement To Build is
dated 6th August 1864. The Church
Building
itself only, cost £5701.00. It was all the
extra's which caused the
problems, which
it is why the church was incomplete at the
time of the Consecration. |

This artists impression
(left) of how St. Mark's
should
have
looked was taken
off the
consecration document dated 1866. It shows
just how splendid the Tower would
have been
if they had not run out of money.
It is interesting to note that as late as the
1930's there were calls in the press for its
erection. Short of a rich benefactor
emerging
it was unlikely to be built, and it never was! |
The
picture (left)
is a cutting out
of an early
copy
of Marksman in
April 1966
on our
Centenary. |

This picture (above left) was taken shortly after the Church was opened. The original is a
very lo-grade quality picture. I believe it to be in the late
1800's.
If you look carefully you can see the wrought iron screen separating the Chancel from the
Apse near the
Altar.
The picture (above right) is of the Altar and the Reredos
of the 4 Apostles ,and Jesus, in
the Apse and was taken in 1953. Notice how
richly decorated it is. It was all painted over
in the 1970's in a plain
cream colour. |

The picture
(above left) is of what was a small chapel in the 1950's. It is now
used to house the musical instruments etc. The picture (above right) is from the 2001 calendar. The original picture
was taken by Steve Lucock and Wayne Hickmott did this picture from the photograph. |

When the
Church was built in the 1860's it was enclosed by a dwarf wall carrying an iron railing, with handsome gates. Judging by this picture (above left) taken in 1907, we can only see
the dwarf wall. We are not sure what happened to the railings or the
handsome gate. The picture (above right) was taken in the 1950's. The Church looks very austere in both the
pictures. You can see that the dwarf wall has been taken down and that the garden around
the Church has been
planted trying to make the Church more inviting. |

The picture (above)
is more up-to-date, it was
taken in September 2001. |
Above picture was painted by
Roger Milton over 10 years ago.
A nice addition to the gallery. |

The picture (above left) is of the wedding of Jennifer & Thomas which we believe was held in 1955. The picture (above right) is another picture of St. Mark's taken in
the 1950's. |

Marie Rose Allen and Dennis Robert Tottman
were married in our church on the 6th October 1962.
They were married by Rev. P.S. Russell. Whom we believe is the clergyman in the
picture.
Pictures donated by Jenneclair Tottman.
I have included them as you can see the way St. Mark's looked in the 1960's. |
Rev. Paul
& Mrs.Esme
Russell
This picture is new to
the gallery.
Added 14 May 2005
Paul. S. Russell came to St. Mark's
as a Curate just after
David McInnes left. |
